Freestyle Article by Jake Zopes

Isn’t freestyle more fun when you have a crew around you of likeminded people? Are you looking for more ways to get involved with freestyle and others within the Rocky Mountain region? Rocky Mountain region is offering two new products that will deliver the goods! Whether you are looking to just grow your bag of tricks or pushing for higher freestyle certifications, we have options for you now. Introducing the Park Improvement clinic and the Freestyle Specialist 2/3 prep course. These clinics will have specific offerings that will set you up in the park and in your lessons.

After seeing success within the Halfpipe improvement clinic (that is being offered at Copper and Steamboat this season) there was a need to empower our members with a similar clinic that focuses on jumps and rails/boxes in the park. The Park improvement clinic will be focused on general riding improvement in the park and not have an exam focus. This is open to all instructors with their alpine or snowboard level 1 and a general interest in improving their park skills. You can come to the event and join with other instructors from around the region in this low pressure and supportive environment. While there is no specific exam focus during this event, you can come with questions and goals for your riding that may relate to exams. This event will be two days long and will have a mixture of features and sizes of features. There will be something for everyone who attends no matter how big or small your current bag of tricks is. The Park Improvement clinic will be all about building the stoke with those around you and finding a place that you can safely improve in the park.

The second new clinic is the Freestyle specialist 2/3 prep event. This is for those with their Freestyle specialist 1 and looking to find out more about the FS 2/3 event. This clinic will be more focused on the actual exam so will include information on not only the riding standards and tasks at each level but also go over teaching and movement analysis within the medium and large parks. The clinician will offer practice teaching and movement analysis sessions, giving guidance on how to include S.P.S, ATML, and other models in your freestyle progressions. For anyone who has looked at the FS2/3 in the past you would have seen a high riding standard and not much to the teaching and MA. Over the past 5 years, the freestyle task force has looked to level out all those areas to become something more realistic for today’s instructor. While the riding standard is now more approachable than it was in the past, the expectations of teaching and movement analysis have risen. This clinic is a great opportunity to gain all the understanding that you need to be successful at the event.

As instructors, we love growth and development. Sometimes, that is hard to get on our own and maybe our mountain doesn’t have the capabilities to provide that support. With these two new events out on our calendar, what are you waiting for! Freestyle progression is right there ready for the taking and what better way to do it than with your fellow instructors from around the region. Head to https://www.psia-rm.org/events/ to find out when these events are happening. Get in early so you make sure you get your spot to improve in freestyle this season.
